Embers in the Dust by TylerCreatesWorlds Embers in the Dust by TylerCreatesWorlds
Bored today, thought I'd give you all some eye candy to get you through the week. So slap this on your desktop and start peeping.

Done with Photoshop in about 6 hours. All done with a super sweet round brush.

i wanted to start by saying, i love ALL of your deviations! so, this critique may be slightly biased!

When i saw the thumbnail for this pic, i actually thought it was a real nebula. I'm constantly inspired by these astronomical bodies, they are so formless, yet inspiring, and you have captured that perfectly!

You have also taken depth into account. in the foreground, we have several stars with lens flares/spikes (I believe that's the term!) and in the distant background, there are red stars that appear to have been shifted by the Doppler effect.

The form itself is magnificent! my eye flows in a cycle from the large bright mass on the right, down to the left, back up to the star in the centre, then to the left star, and finally, back up to the closest star to the viewer.

As per my personal critique process, I'm apt to provide some 'negative feedback' in addition to positive. However, I cannot in any way, say something it wrong here, I can only say, maybe next time make it purple for me? xD
What do you think?

i'm so appreciative of your awesome work! i just got the macbook pro with retina display, and
i was really hoping to find wallpapers that were similar, but better, than the pre-installed ones
with that same retina quality. so thank you very much, and keep up the great work!

Sure, as long as you link back.

I actually start with bigger soft strokes to get the main shape of the nebula, Then I start working down in size with a hard edge brush and smudge tool to further bring out the details. Then I just keep working in smaller and bringing out more deets.

The shines were done with photoshops render flare.

permission to use if i link back here for credit? I am working on a 3d ship design and this would make a nice backdrop.

Thin threads grouped together and overlaid with semi-transparent larger strokes on a new layer, then blended and erased gently into the backdrop (also painted and blended into a sort of flowy cloud in space), then a new layer dotted all over with stars of varying hues and sizes, and each of the larger ones given their own glow, then...

Wait... So how'd you do the shine on the closest/largest stars? THOSE couldn't have been the round brush alone...

Nice shines, too. Did you use some sort of Starburst combined with a Shine effect, or... what?

I apologize profusely if I'm bogging you with questions. But mind you, not many can draw nebulae. ESPECIALLY not by primarily using ONE tool shape.
