Been working on this one for a while. Went through a lot of variations on this. I think I'm happy with the finished product.

The Final Forest
by *verseless

As I look up into the night sky at the dusty jewel hanging there in the bountiful heavens, my breathe leaves me as the planet rotates into full view. They tell me it was once a lush world, equal to or exceeding the tropics back home, I can see it there in that last strip of verdant forest. The emerald shard on the rusty ob standing in stark contrast to the blackness around it, that forest with kilometer high trees. Branches reaching towards the pale red sky, colored by infintesimal grains of dust. Or at least I tell myself that's what it is, they say the atmosphere is going away now and anything left is almost pure oxygen, there hasn't been respiration life there for eons. I image walking through the soft loamy soil, humidity clinging to the hairs on my arm, choking my breathe with the aroma of natural compost.

Wandering through that distant forest I see myself discovering a trace, or perhaps a member of that once proud race that built these ruins. My gaze moves slowly across the once masterfully sculpted arches near me, the grit of the stone falling away under my touch, noticeable even through the years of callouses, and still I feel this soft grit on my palms, alien grit. Each time I come here on my way home I take the time to look up at that rusty orb above me, and it brings home just what it is we are all fighting for. Survival, even now as the atmosphere dissipates, and each day the forest recedes further towards the banks of that final river the plants continue to grow and fight fr life as the desertification encroaches further each day.

They say that hope springs eternal, and I don't know, I really don't, but that forest gives me hope that if whoever lived there, and who ever built these ruins could do so that we may do so as well. Their legacy is washed away, faceless, nameless, culture-less. But their world remains, clinging to life by a final thread as it dies. I'll be back, hopefully in time to see that last river boil off and the final leaf to shrivel and die, such is the life of a traveler, always moving, watching, listening. What I see speaks to me, and to you, but do you listen?
What do you think?

I can see a little bit of himalaya there, my friend xD

But that's okay. As I went through your gallery with my jaw completely ripped apart from astonishment, I must say that your work is seriously great. But not just simply "great"... Because I've seen numerous space artists on DeviantArt, some of them making some overly nice stuff. I've been trying to put my greatly overwhelmed feelings into words by using metaphors or any similar crazy stuff. But you are the first guy where I am making a true statement here, because your art is so exeptionally great, that there is only one phrase to describe it: Mind Blowing

If I could give you anything more than a watch+, then tell me. I am still a kid though so no commercial stuff can be rendered, otherwise I would consider spending some money on your prints (:

The big planet has a quite original look with its green region. It's not Earth, not Mars, not a random planet. We can imagine it with its own features.
And this foreground is really excellent, though we see the CG rendering. These few ruins are very mysterious, especially standing in this kind of crater.
And the framing, with this foreground leaning to the right seems sooo floating in space between other celestial bodies.
To end, I agree with Steve Burg's notice about the light on the planet that could fit a little bit more to the foreground, but seriously, the picture already works great like that !
